See & be seen: tips for bikers, cyclists & pedestrians


Pedestrians

  • Wear reflective clothing or reflective sashes
  • Stay on the pavement where possible
  • Walk facing oncoming traffic
  • Cross roads at demarcated and safe spots
  • Be extra careful at night and in dimly lit areas

 

Motorcyclists

  • Wear reflective items or clothing
  • Keep the motorcycle’s headlight on
  • Stay out of the blind spots of other road users
  • Leave enough room to manoeuvre – don’t tailgate or move between cars
  • At all times be courteous, careful and aware

 

Cyclists

  • Wear reflective items or clothing
  • Ride in a straight line and don’t swerve from side to side
  • Use hand signals to indicate if you are turning
  • Watch out for pedestrians
  • Obey the rules of the road at all times

 

Motorists

  • Be aware of your surroundings and avoid distractions
  • Keep to the speed limit and adhere to the rules of the road
  • Don’t drive when you’re tired or under the influence of alcohol
  • Check your blind spots regularly and signal your intention to turn or change lanes
  • Always be on the lookout for pedestrians, cyclists and animals
